I remember when I became a team leader. My company didn't have a clue and took advantage of my position. In this article, learn from my experience and don't get taken for a ride.
There are many team leader jobs out there now. It's a funny word, I think it used to be called "junior manager" but now anytime someone looks after a team of 5 to 10 people, they call them a team leader. You've got to be prepared in this new job. Why? Because people will now hold you responsible. You'll become a single point of contact and get a lot of angry people gunning directly for you. But you know what, being a team leader can have great perks too. I know because I've been there myself. Here are a few tips: Delegate As Much As You CanDon't make the fatal mistake that many new team leaders do. Don't take on a bigger workload. That is not your job as a team leader. Your job is to get your guys to deliver what is expect of the team by your own boss. If your boss expects you to do your old job and a new one then you seriously have to talk with him because it is 100% unsustainable. Appear Confident At All TimesYou'll have many new enemies now including other managers. These people will go head to head with you and they will love it if you crack because it makes them look better by comparison. As a team leader, you need to always look your best and most confident so that you rattle your opponents instead. Keep Your Generals HappyFor you to get the most out of your new job, you need a couple of really good workers and close confidantes that you can trust. Don't overload them will work or they will resent you, but try to give them other perks like taking them for coffee every week or giving close career advice or giving the odd afternoon off that no one will know about. These guys will help run your team even when you are not there. Have you just become or been offered a job as a team leader and don't know what to do?
