Why is effective team building so important? Well, more and more of us have come to realize that it is far better to focus our minds on our core business. This is normally where our strengths naturally lie. If we are focusing on where our strengths lie, then how do we deal with those areas that we are less strong in? By getting someone else who is strong in that area to focus on it! This makes up a team. Whether this team is part of corporate unit, or an entrepreneur who works ‘alone’ or indeed a family unit, we can still benefit from building strong relationships to enable us to achieve more.


Leadership
In every team there needs to be a leader. It would be impossible to achieve a goal with a group of people all attempting to lead, as if everyone is leading, who is following and doing? No-one! However, the important thing is to understand the difference between ‘leading’ and ‘controlling’. Leading has a positive effect, controlling has a negative effect.

Even those of us who naturally tend to take the ‘lead’ will recognize when we have a team leader or manager who is good. For one thing, they get the job done but for another, they do it without belittling, by not being afraid to hand over responsibility to others, by accepting blame by passing on and giving credit where it is due, by building people up rather than knocking them down.

Corporate Team Building
My experience of the corporate world was that these people were far less prevalent than those who liked to control. However, people can be trained to be better leaders. I personally think that it is a myth to say that people have to be born leaders though I do accept that some people find it more natural and comfortable to be a leader and some to be a follower. Without followers, there would be no team.

Everyone should bring their own strength. And the reason why the business world likes to use team building activities is because it exposes teams to an environment outside of their normal working environment allowing people to express themselves more fully and come out of their shells away from the confines of the boardroom. This in return, gives them the confidence to know that they can indeed be heard, providing they speak in the right way.

Not only can it allow those less likely to lead, to do so, it can also help those who are ‘controlling’ to see how their behavior can have a negative affect a team. When someone who has worked in a position for a length of time is then put into a role that is alien to them and to their teammates at the same time, then they can no longer control as easily as they are usually not so confident about what they are doing.

Effective Leadership
Leadership is all about coordinating, communicating and channeling if you have a team of people on an outward bound course, you may be amazed at who the true leaders are. If you watch and listen carefully, you will see some new skills and strengths emerging that could be put to good use in your corporate team!
